One of the biggest derby’s in world football the “El Classico” is played by clubs from two cities miles apart – Barcelona and Real Madrid. For there to be serious rivalry both clubs have to have the same standing the same ambition and to an extent share history together; think the Milan clubs, Boca and River plate; this quite frankly is not the case for the 2 North London clubs, the only reason spurs have for being rivals to Arsenal is proximity.
While Arsenal play European football on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with 4 officials, spurs didn’t qualify for Thursday European football with 6 officials.
When Arsenal were winning titles our main rivalry was with Man u, then we hoped spurs could take some points of united so we could stay ahead in the league. At the moment being tagged the most vulnerable member of the big 4 has seen us drop in from our main position and all the focus has to be on getting back there.
Examining both clubs closely will show there is quite a gap.
Arsenal have been title winners and always been serious title challengers; title in this case refers to the premiership, the champions’ league and indeed the F.A cup. Over the last few seasons, we have dropped our mantle as serious title contenders but with the current squad we are back there challenging. Spurs are title contenders as well, but title in their case refers to the carling cup; indeed they have to compete with Arsenal’s B team for this trophy; also some exquisitely made lasagne foiled their dream of being in the big 4.
Spurs can be a premier league contender but that will happen if the big 4 decide to join a European super league and forget about the premier league; but then spurs will still finish runner up to Aston Villa in the title race, ok I was being generous they’ll actually finish behind Man city, Villa and Everton.
Forget what Keane says, Spurs don’t have a squad able to match the gunners; Gomes could challenge for our number 1 spot, Ledley King is a part time footballer and couldn’t displace Gallas and sidekick; the fullback positions are not up for debate where we have French internationals. In midfield Palacios could get a game if Song goes for the African nations cup but he is an Arsenal reject and so is Bentley. Theo, who is not yet a first team regular for the gunners, is ahead of Lennon in the England pecking order; Modric is a very good player but he is not good enough to tie his boot in the same room as our captain. Upfront, Defoe could give any of our forwards serious competition.
There you have it Keane, only 2 spurs players could get a game at Arsenal.
Spurs go through managers like Popeye goes through spinach; but the current spurs boss is a man I have a lot of respect for. He did an excellent job for Portsmouth relegating Southampton in the process and winning the F.A cup for Pompey as well.
Wenger on the other hand has harnessed the greatest players to ever grace the green rectangle called the football field, from George Weah to Thierry Henry; Le Boss is a master in player development. He is the greatest manager Arsenal football club has had; his name would come up in the first few lines of premiership history and he has international pedigree after successes in French and Japanese football.
Harry looks pale when compared to Wenger; if the name Wenger pops up in the first few lines of premier league history Rednapp will come up some 100+ pages later.
When you say Madrid football club everyone thinks Real Madrid but Athletico are a Madrid football club as well and so are Getafe; Same with Espanyol and Barca, Juventus and Torino. When anyone says North London football, the first thought has to be Arsenal FC.
A local derby is always a big deal and a north London derby is one of the biggest with passion and emotions ready to run high but being rivals to spurs should be doing them a favour because without Arsenal they won’t have any serious rivals.
We need to get back to our rightful place, winning titles, playing the derby of England with Manchester United. Arsenal needs to put spurs back in their place this weekend, Man u did it Chelsea did it now it’s our turn.
